  • Forbes on Doing Business in College Towns

In a new Forbes article, author Rich Karlgaard says: College towns are the best bargain in U.S. real estate--the ideal mix of low prices, culture, fun and high-tech growth. If I were an entrepreneur hoping to rub technology and talent
  • Hi, Stuart-

I don’t know if you remember me, I was enrolled in the MBA program while you were there. I graduated in 2001 (Marketing & e-Commerce).

But, I just read your blog from the Roanoke Times/New River Current, “Connecting People”.

I was so excited to read the Forbes.com article! I thought I was the only person who felt that staying in a college town is well worth it (if we can just find jobs to keep people here!). I think undergraduates have to go out and get their feet wet in big cities before they can truly value everything towns like Blacksburg can offer, though. I’ll never go back to commuting for 4 hours a day and all of the stress that big city life is all about! But, it took commuting 4 hours a day for five years to realize that.

I think other folks in the CRC would be interested in your blog. Maybe a link from the CRC newsletter to reach more folks here? I think its great, and I’m sure others would, too.

Anyway, I really appreciated your “Jobs Now!” Section, too. My current job’s funding is running out and it’s time for me to move on, and I’ve been afraid that the only opportunities available to me would be to start commuting to Roanoke.

Thanks again for a getting the discussion out there about how to keep talent in our area!
